International vocal powerhouse Jazzmeia Horn takes the stage at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum on March 28, as part of the fifth season of RISE, the Museum’s popular pop, rock, and hip-hop music series that features emerging talent and young artists. Boston hip-hop artist and producer Latrell James will kick-off the show.

Winner of the 2015 Thelonius Monk International Vocal Jazz Competition and 2013 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition, Jazzmeia Horn has a name that speaks for itself, capturing her very essence. A Dallas, Texas native, Horn moved to New York City in 2009 to pursue a solo career as she earned a degree at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. Soon after, she began performing at world famous jazz festivals and night clubs, alongside musicians such as Winard Harper, Junior Mance, Billy Harper, and Ellis Marsalis. In 2018, she made her Grammys debut with a fiery rendition of “Moanin’.”

Currently, Horn is a teaching artist in The NJPAC Wells Fargo Jazz for Teens Program and Jazz in the Schools Program in Newark, New Jersey. She appears in various clubs on the jazz scene nationally and internationally, leading her dynamic group “The Artistry of Jazz Horn,” which includes a pianist, bassist, drummer, saxophonist, poet, dancer, and herself as vocalist.

Latrell James, a Dorchester, MA native, began rapping at 12 years old. He has since become a nationally-recognized songwriter, producer and live performer, notably sharing the stage at universities with artists like Kendrick Lamar, Cam’ron, and Scarface. Known as the voice behind Cheerios’ “Good Goes Around” nationwide commercial campaign, James is the mastermind behind such hit songs as the 2018 Boston Music Award-winning Song of the Year “Okay” and “Mona Lisa Bonet.”  His R&B melodies and hard-hitting lyrics address issues of race and social injustice. Off stage, James is an active volunteer in his community, often teaching after-school music production to local youth.

RISE concerts begin at 7 p.m. Award-winning and Boston-based DJ L’Duke (FKA LeahV) will be the house DJ for every RISE concert this season. The RISE music series is curated by musicians Shea Rose and Simone Scazzocchio.
