The Warmth of Other Suns, by Isabel Wilkerson, is a wonderfully insightful book about the Great Migration of millions of Black Americans from the South to the North from the 1920’s to the 1960’s.  After interviewing many individual participants, Ms. Wilkerson chose to highlight the lives of three of them, Ida Mae Gladney, George Starling, and Dr. Robert Foster, including their tribulations endured in the Jim Crow South, the uncertainties of leaving their homes, friends, and families, and the challenges of acclimating to different social norms.  It’s an inspiring story of the striving for human dignity and offers an empathetic understanding of the echoes of this migration that are still being felt today.

In an event sponsored by Wentworth and the new Colleges of the Fenway program in Migration Studies, we’re pleased to announce a community discussion of The Warmth of Other Suns open to faculty, staff, and students. After introductory remarks, we will break into smaller groups for lightly-guided discussion, where we can share personal responses and insights.

If you’re interested in participating, please send an email to Doug Sondak at sondakd@wit.edu.

A Zoom link will be provided to everyone before the event.
