Director, Teaching and Learning Collaborative

The Colleges of the Fenway (COF) invites applications for a unique educational leadership position, Director of the Teaching and Learning Collaborative (TLC) to begin in spring
or summer 2009.  Established in 1996 and incorporated as a 501 (c) 3 in 2003, the
Colleges of the Fenway is a collaboration of six colleges: Emmanuel College,
Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and
Health Sciences, Simmons College, Wentworth Institute of Technology, and Wheelock
College.  Located in the Longwood Medical and Academic Area of Boston, these colleges,
each with its own unique mission, offer a world of learning and experience on and off the
campus. Collectively, the Colleges of the Fenway represent over 11,400 full-time
undergraduate students, 983 full-time faculty, 649 full-time staff, and 3,173 different
course offerings.

The Colleges of the Fenway has received a grant to establish the Teaching and Learning Collaborative.  The grant will cover all expenses for the first year, 75% the second year
and 50% the third year.  The purpose of the Teaching and Learning Collaborative is to
enhance and integrate programs offered by the individual colleges in order to promote
the professional growth of faculty throughout their career, become a resource for
academic collaboration for faculty research and academic programs and create a
center for the study of faculty development and teaching effectiveness.  The goals of the
TLC are to improve faculty teaching skills through professional development programs
shared among the COF institutions, share expertise across colleges to strengthen
programs on individual campuses, facilitate the development of support networks
for faculty across institutions, and increase collaborative academic research and
programs.  The Collaborative will offer several programs to meet these goals including:

  1. An annual fall Teaching and Learning Conference with follow-up sessions in the
    spring
  2. Development programs across the life-cycle of faculty: new, mid-career and
    senior faculty
  3. A certificate in college teaching
  4. Development programs for department chairs
  5. Development programs for adjuncts
  6. Faculty communities of practice based on interests
  7. Research on faculty development and teaching effectiveness
  8. A central database of faculty expertise and interests


Responsibilities of the Director:

  1. Provide leadership to establish the Collaborative
  2. Work with the chief academic officers and deans at each of the COF institutions
    to identify needs, develop, and implement the programs of the Collaborative
  3. Develop and implement budgets and marketing plans to make the Collaborative self supporting at the conclusion of the grant
  4. Provide instruction in the programs of the Collaborative
  5. Provide leadership in evaluating the work of Collaborative and its impact on teaching and learning
  6. Maintain a website of teaching resources for the Collaborative as well as databases to demonstrate achievement of the Collaborative’s goals
  7. As a member of the Colleges of the Fenway, Inc. staff, the Director will report to the Executive Director of the Colleges of the Fenway.

Qualifications:

  1. Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree
  2. Demonstrable record of excellence in teaching in higher education
  3. Knowledge of current research in pedagogy and assessment
  4. Strong managerial skills and experience in budget and program administration
  5. Knowledge of established and emerging academic technologies and information
    resources
  6. Demonstrated ability to work in and promote a collaborative environment,
    across multiple organizations
  7. Excellent communication skills
  8. Excellent organizational skills
  9. Commitment to diversity and curricular multi-culturalism
  10. Demonstrated ability to lead a team in the design and development of programs
  11. Entrepreneurial spirit
  12. A sense of humor, ability to deal with ambiguity, energy and creativity
