2008 Muddy River Research Symposium - Agenda

On Tuesday, April 15th, the COF Environmental Science Program hosted the 2nd annual Muddy River Research Symposium at Wheelock College. Similar to last year, students and faculty shared research they have conducted on the Muddy River. Community and environmental groups outside of the Colleges of the Fenway attended including the Emerald Necklace Conservancy, Boston Parks Department, MASCO, and the Muddy River MMOC.

In addition to the poster presentations given by students and faculty, the formal program included a presentation by James W. Hunt III, the Chief of Environmental and Energy Services for the City of Boston. Also during the formal program of the symposium, Kate Bowditch the Director of Projects at the Charles River Watershed Association, Margaret Dyson the Director of Historic Parks at the Boston Parks Department, and Frances Allou Gershwin Chair of the Muddy River Restoration Project Maintenance and Management Oversight Committee (MMOC) held a plenary presentation entitled Engineering an Urban Watershed: The Muddy River – Past,
Present, and Future.

At the end of the evening, Ellen Faszewski awarded 3 sets of Certificate of Excellence Awards to poster presentations. The recipients were:

  • Evaluation of Xray Fluorescence for the Direct Determination of Heavy Metal Contaminants in Suspended Solids. Fejes, Jessie; Indoccio, Amber; Johnson, Lauren; Rockwell, Sarah; Tan, Mei; Berger, Michael; Simmons College.

  • Greenway Path Restoration Along the Emerald Necklace: Charlesgate, Arborway and Across Route 9.  Furth, Peter G.; Northeastern University. Arborway team:  Boccia, Michelle; Caparco, Andrew; Mayotte, Joseph; Rothstein, Jocelyn.

  • Predicting the Effect of the Muddy River Restoration Project on Common Vertebrates of the Fens. Wallace, Rachael; Tellin, Steven; Yuen, Po-Yu; Janowski, Tom; Wentworth Institute of Technology.
